would you buy a castle in scotland?

The husband was just joking and asked how I would feel about living in Scotland, and I said give me 10 minutes to take a quick look. So I did.

Jobs, check, looks good. Houses, oh yes. Weather, hmm. warm in summer, reaching 90F (32C) but sometimes it’s just all rain. And barely any sunshine in winter months. When we moved to California I suffered from the excessive rain (be it said everyone told me that it was a really bad year, but still – our first 7 months was constant rain and cold, or so it feels at least now afterwards).

Whereas I am in love with the Scottish house and a move to an ancient (but cold?) castle would be a great start for a new year – I mean imagine owning your own castle or classical mansion with 36000 sf ft (over 3400 m2) or a bit smaller one with several guest houses, stables and 133 acres – all with the same price than a 2000 sq ft (185m2) one level chipboard house possibly in desperate need of repairs in Silicon Valley, where the garden barely is bigger than the house (not ideal for a gardening enthusiast)….Oh, I am so dreaming now, but I think despite being closer to family and friends it is still a no at this point, but never say never….

So which one would you choose of these options?? Not all the houses are priced the same though; the common factor is they all are located close to Edinburgh and Glasgow (the big cities), but prices vary from $3.6 M for the top 2 (2.3 m pounds) down to $1.6M for the last one (i.e. one million pounds)…

First Palo Alto comp- $1.5M gives you 1646 ssq ft (152m2) on a 0.14 acres (571m2) of land

Second Palo Alto comp – for $3.7 you get 1 acre and house of 4800 sq ft (445m2), but looks like no gardens and the house isn’t really the prettiest I have seen…
