Our move from China earlier this year was in the end organised in the space of few weeks, and I am slowly trying to catch up on all the writing about things to see and places to stay at. One of the hotels I would definitely recommend in Beijing is the Kempinski Hotel in the Lufthansa Center, located in the middle of city’s diplomatic district of Chaoyang. Since we stayed in this hotel for nine days and had impeccable service and therefore great experience all throughout our stay.

The hotel has a total of 526 rooms, and they are spacious for Beijing standards, the air smells very clean (which is quite an important factors considering the heavy pollution issues in Beijing) and in general the decor looks great after the recent renovations (but note at the time of our visit the renovations had not been completed on all floors yet). The style is rather classic with hints of oriental designs added to the mainly gold and cream colour palette.

Since we travelled as a family I picked a combination of a suite and an executive room because they could be connected – basically there is a living room in between those two bedrooms, one with a king and the other with two single beds (it’s not possible to combine two suites, hence the combination). With the suites and executives rooms comes an access to the executive lounge where one can enjoy complementary breakfast (or ask for coffee etc delivered to your room free of charge), afternoon tea as well as drinks and light tapas-style offerings in the evening. Also the non-alcoholic refreshments in the mini bar are complementary, as is a daily refilled bowl of fruit also.

We stayed at the hotel right before the Chinese new year, so the hotel was beautifully decorated with the traditional Chinese red and gold decorations, and based on that display I’ll assume that during other local festivities this Kempinski hotel in Beijing will also be decorated in a manner which showcases nicely the local culture and style.

The Beijing Kempinski Hotel has a five restaurants, and since it is located in the Lufthansa centre there are plenty of other food choices available nearby too. I would also definitely recommend the lovely Kempi Deli for little pastries and other delicatessen during the day time.

Since we had young kids who were quite so tired after a long school day, we mainly ordered room service. The prices are very reasonable and there is a good selection both Western and Asian meals of offer. The presentation of the food was great and service impeccable, as with everything else.

The executive level is located on the 15th floor (with its own check-in area and concierge desk), and these upper floors provide a great views of the city. The guests can either enjoy the view of the Liangma river (pictured) or the skyline of the ever-growing city.  The check-in process was smooth and we were offered drinks while waiting for our luggage. A lovely surprise upon arriving to our suite was a good bottle of red wine, especially so as wine is very expensive in China and it is hard to find good wines which are reasonably priced!

The hotel also has a health club, pool and a lovely spa area on the 18th floor. Although the pool could have been a bit warmer to my liking, it didn’t stop the offspring thoroughly enjoying it in slushy February weather. Another lovely little touch in the rooms were the toiletries, as they were from Molton Brown – one of my favourite companies. I should add thought that regular rooms have different toiletries to the executive level rooms and suites.

Kempinski Beijing Kempinski Hotels are normally very child-friendly, and despite this hotel obviously being geared more towards the business clientele, our family was very well received. Upon arrival this cute set of very Pantone-styled table and chairs was brought to the children and there were plenty of fresh fruits of offer every day. The hotel also had two slipper sizes on offer for children and Johnson&Johnson children’s toiletries.

Kempinski Kids Club

Although the hotel did not have a kids club on site, the children received lovely back packs filled with activities and games such as puzzles, dominoes, a memory game and a colouring book. The girls received pink packs and out son a blue one, where the princess puzzles were replaced with Lightning McQueen ones and the hair accessories with a key ring.  The hats, bags and toys were very good quality and all are still in good use. They are a great reminder for the children of the good time they had in Beijing during the last few days before our move back to Europe!

I actually ended up making this framed piece of art where I painted the background with dark grey to bring the colours of the masks out. In its 3D-frame it’s going to look gorgeous – a constant reminder of our lovely stay in Kempinski and of our last days in China!
