kipling time at bateman’s

I am currently reading Rudyard Kipling’s book Kim, which is set in India. I have yet to visit India, but I have been to Kipling’s house Bateman in Sussex, South-Eastern England, and that certainly is an interesting place to visit. And if the day happens to be sunny, is there anything lovelier that a picnic in that traditional country garden.

Kipling lived in Bateman for over thirty years from 1902 until his death and enjoyed the solitude provided by the surrounding countryside. Nowadays the house is owned by the National Trust and can be visited between April and October.

And any visit to a National Trust property should include a traditional cream tea in their tea shop and visit to the lovely National Trust gift shop. I would highly recommend their room sprays, Cath Kidstone gifs sets, gardening presents or some of the lovely books – everything there is so countryside and traditional English.
