a relaxing day in dinefrw castle in wales
Welcome to explore Dinefrw in Llandello, Wales – one of the best National Trust properties we have visited by far: the location is breathtakingly beautiful, there is the 12th century castle ruins to explore, an amazing historic house where you get to try and explore things, a medieval deer park, cows and sheep (which kids love), lovely walks in the forest and around the pond – and you can finish the day with a cream tea in the cafe or with ice creams outside. What a lovely day!
I would recommend starting the tour by exploring the historic house and its’ gardens and then heading to the castle ruins and a walk. The house looks like a little fairy-tale castle (and is also a popular wedding venue – they had one scheduled for the day we visited the property too) and the special factor about is that you can actually explore and learn about things instead of just walking around and not being able to touch anything.

The ground floor contains the servants quarters and our children loved trying to follow the proper procedures in polishing the shoes, ironing, sharpening knives and other daily tasks.

Once you have explored the house take a look at the lovely little garden, white cows and deers grazing nearby. It’s very relaxing and fun on a good day.

Take a map from the visitor centre before heading to the valley and the castle ruins – it’s a delightful walk up the hill and through a little forest. The ruins would also be a great place for a picnic as there is a nice grassy area and benches – as well as pretty views stretching over the valley.

If you have time extend your walk on the way from the ruins down the valley: there is a little lake and covered walkways along the old stone walls back to the parking area, which is both fun for the children and enjoyable for the beautiful views.
