touring the charming old town of tallinn pt.1

I’m in love with Tallinn. The city (at least the parts we saw) has been so beautifully restored and the new buildings outside the old town seem to integrate well too – just look at this first photo showcasing the fabulous mix of old and new!

old meets new

Old and new buildings integrate well outside the old town in city centre

marketplace for local handcrafts

Marketplace selling local handicrafts just outside the entrance to the old town

Enter through the gates of old town

The remains of the main gateway to the old town of Tallinn

medieval feel

Local vendors selling flavoured roasted almonds from old carts

Cobblestone streets reserved for pedestrians only

Typical medieval cobblestone streets – these have been reserved for pedestrians only

Church by the central plaza

Old church by the main square. As Tallinn is also one of the cultural capitals of Europe in 2011 there were a lot of things going on here

City of tunnel walkways

Cute little walkways up the hill go through old buildings

Houses built on top of the old walls

The old town really has layers – here the uppermost wall where new houses have been built atop – and they have magnificent sea views over the city

towers everywhere

Towers and church bell tower

Beautiful everywhere

This part of the wall is really well kept. I love this road that goes through – so picturesque!
